In addition to our shelter, we offer:

There is no way to spot an abuser in a crowd, but most abusers share some common characteristics. Some of the subtle warning signs include:

  • They insist that you stop participating in your preferred leisure activities or spending
    time with family and friends.
  • They are extremely jealous or controlling.
  • They do not take responsibility for their actions and blame others for everything that goes wrong.
  • They criticize their partner’s appearance and make frequent put-downs.
  • Their words and actions don’t match.

It’s important to remember that domestic violenceis first and foremost a pattern of power and control. Any one of these behaviors may not be indicative of abuse on its own, until it is considered as part of a pattern of behavior

Yes, The Retreat acknowledges the distinct challenges facing the LGBTQ+ individuals experiencing intimate partner violence. To address these challenges, our programs are accessible to the LGBTQ+ community and we provide services in a manner that respects our LGBTQ+ clients’ background and experience.

Yes! We are always looking for volunteers to help out in the office, with events, and at our thrift shop. Please call our administrative office at 631 – 329 – 4398 and speak with Kathryn. You can also make a donation to help support families in need of our services.

If you think your partner is tracking you, you should reset your phone as if it were new. All of your apps will need to be reloaded. You will lose contacts, pictures, and text messages so if you want to keep them, you should save them first. Please seek assistance in doing this with your carrier or the Apple store.
